My watercolours are aimed at capturing the atmosphere of the North Wales coast and mountains. The transparent medium of watercolour is idealiy suited to this, and traditionally 19th century artists infused their paintings with the light and atmosphere of the sublime.
I paint the finished watercolours in my studio. The initial drawings and sketches for them are done outdoors 'on the spot' in order to capture the fleeting moment of sky,cloud, mist, or sea. Outdoors everything changes and so the final painting is always a distilation of this transientary moment. Watercolour also acurately translates the colours of the seasons such as Summer sun and Autumn mists, and such translucency is that which I always strive for. I have also painted the Dorset coast, parts of Hampshire and the Peak District.
